Abstract: Ocean freight accounts for 15-25% of the total cost of goods. With high freight rates, how to fit more goods into each container directly impacts customer profits. A group of Chinese LVL factories are using the wisdom of "permutation and combination" to optimize loading plans and help customers save real money.
1. The "Space Waste" of a Container
A standard 40-foot container has internal dimensions of approximately 12 meters long, 2.35 meters wide, and 2.39 meters high, with a theoretical volume of about 67 cubic meters. However, in practice, due to mismatches between product specifications and container dimensions, and unreasonable stacking methods, many factories only load 55-58 cubic meters, achieving a space utilization rate of only 80-85%.
"This 10 cubic meters of 'space waste' is actually a loss of profit for the customer," explained a factory manager with ten years of export experience. He calculated that, based on an ocean freight rate of $150 per cubic meter, loading an extra 5 cubic meters per container would save the customer $750. Exporting 1,000 containers a year amounts to $750,000.
2. Three Key Elements of Loading Optimization
How to increase loading capacity? Some factories focus on three aspects:
- Product Length Optimization: Setting standard lengths as integer divisors or simple multiples of container dimensions. Lengths such as 2.4 meters, 3.0 meters, 4.0 meters, and 6.0 meters can achieve "seamless splicing" within a 12-meter container, avoiding space waste.
- Length Combination: How to combine and stack materials of different lengths to reduce gaps? Filling gaps between longer materials with shorter ones can improve space utilization by 5-8%.
- Compression Packaging: High-pressure packing machines compress each bundle of material more tightly. Traditional manual packing results in a 15-20% void ratio per bundle; machine-compressed packing reduces this to 8-10%.
3. "One Cargo, One Policy" Loading Solutions
Different orders and combinations of specifications require different loading solutions. Leading factories adopt a "one-size-fits-one" approach based on specific circumstances:
- Single-specification orders: All goods are of the same length and are stacked vertically for neat arrangement and maximum loading efficiency.
- Multi-specification orders: Long and short materials are mixed, with shorter materials filling the gaps between longer materials. Longer materials are placed first, followed by shorter materials to fill the gaps.
- Light and heavy goods are mixed: Low-density products (such as thin sheets) are placed on top, and high-density products (such as square timber) are placed on the bottom, balancing weight and making full use of space.
"We simulate the loading process using software before loading," said a logistics manager. "We determine the position and order of each bundle, and the workers just load according to the diagram."
4. "Visualization" of Loading Optimization
To reassure customers, some factories visualize the loading process:
- Pre-loading plan diagram: Before shipment, a color loading diagram is provided to the customer, indicating the position, specifications, and quantity of each bundle of goods.
- Photographs of the loading process: Key steps during loading are photographed and sent to the customer for confirmation.
- Post-loading video: After loading, a short video is filmed showing the final state inside the container.
"When customers see our loading diagrams, they know we're genuinely trying to save them money," said a sales manager. "Many customers choose long-term partnerships because of this detail."
5. Real Customer Feedback
"We never cared about loading before, thinking it was the supplier's job," said a Malaysian importer. "Later, a factory proactively provided us with loading diagrams, and we discovered that each container was loaded with 5-6 extra cubic meters. Over a year, this saved us tens of thousands of dollars in freight costs."
"The combination of long and short sections is very practical," said a Filipino contractor. "We ordered 6-meter beams, and the gaps in the middle were just right for 3-meter short materials. One container held the goods that would normally require 1.5 containers."
